1. Dual-Sensor Technology

Version 4 introduces two independent PIR sensors, each with a distinct lens designed for a specific purpose:

• The Far Sensor uses a long focal-length lens to create a narrow, beam-like detection zone - ideal for pinpoint accuracy, precise compositions and long-range detections of up to 20 metres.
• The Wide Sensor provides a broader 60º detection area, perfect for monitoring open spaces or waking equipment before the main trigger event.

Working together, the two sensors deliver increased detection reliability and range, while reducing the chance of missed subjects and improving the robustness of your setup in unpredictable field conditions. Each sensor can be individually tuned, disabled, or assigned a dedicated role - for example, using the wide sensor to wake the camera and the far sensor to fire the shutter.

The v4 replaces the v3’s dials and switches with a clear LCD display and tactile button interface, giving you fast, intuitive control over every setting - from trigger sensitivity and wireless channel to burst count and video recording length. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need anything else to get started?

Each PIR v4 includes a free wireless receiver, so you can create a fully wireless camera-trap setup straight out of the box using your own DSLR or mirrorless camera.

You’ll just need to add:

• A camera connecting cable (available here) to link the receiver to your camera.
• An NP-F battery - or compatible power source such as the 6xAA Adapter or external DC input - to power the sensor. NP-F batteries are commonly used in photographic and video equipment, available widely from a range of third-party manufacturers, and should be easy to purchase locally. The PIR v4 is compatible with NP-F batteries up to the size of an NP-F970 and with a maximum height of 60mm. Note that some third-party manufacturers produce NP-F batteries with built-in USB-charging ports that exceed this height and will not fit inside the sensor. For wired connections, we recommend using our new sealed, screw-lock cable for the most secure and moisture-resistant setup.

To mount the sensor, we suggest a MightyPod or Jungle Mounts.

Placing a silica gel sachet inside the sensor helps protect against humidity during long outdoor deployments.

Which cameras is it compatible with?

The sensor can be used to trigger the majority of DSLR and mirrorless cameras. The main requirement is that the camera has a socket for an external shutter-release cable.
Canon, Nikon, and Sony cables are available here, cables for certain Panasonic cameras are available here, and our Sony Video Cable (for video shooting) can be found here. If you are unsure whether a cable exists for your camera model, please contact us.

Is the PIR v4 compatible with my existing Camtraptions kit?

Yes. It is compatible with all of our mounts. The built-in wireless transmitter is fully compatible with all existing Camtraptions Wireless Receivers, operating on the same 15 selectable channels. For wired connections, we strongly recommend using our sealed, screw-lock cables to prevent moisture entering the enclosure. While it is possible to use our older unsealed cables, doing so increases the risk of moisture ingress and will void the warranty.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes. The PIR v4 is made in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧, and we ship worldwide.

For orders to the United States 🇺🇸, import tariffs are prepaid, so there’s nothing extra to pay upon delivery. The same applies to orders within the European Union 🇪🇺 - all taxes and duties are prepaid, meaning the price you see at checkout is the total cost.

Is the PIR v4 weatherproof?

Yes. The housing is fully weather-sealed and designed for outdoor use in rain, humidity, and dust. However, it should not be submerged in water and we advise always keeping a sachet of silica inside to safeguard against humidity.

How long will the battery last?

With a standard third-party NP-F 970 lithium-ion battery, you can expect at least 3 months of standby time under typical field conditions. Actual runtime depends on battery quality, temperature, trigger frequency, and wireless use.

How do I update the firmware?

Firmware updates are installed directly from a microSD card, allowing you to apply improvements and new features yourself. The update procedure is explained in the manual. Updates and release notes can be found here. 

Will the PIR v3 be discontinued?

No. The PIR v3 is a proven device, relied upon and trusted by photographers and filmmakers around the world. We are committed to keeping it as part of our range.
